The run-oriented Sooners were forced to rely
on the pass in an exciting fourth quarter
comeback that secured a third place finish for
Oklahoma in the final polls. With Florida
State ahead by seven with 3:19 remaining in
the game, Oklahoma quarterback J.C. Watts
brought the Sooners back. Oklahoma coach
Barry Switzer gambled and went for two points
and the victory instead of settling for a sure tie.
Florida State, in Bobby Bowden's fifth year
with the Seminoles, finished fifth in the polls
after going 0-11 only seven years earlier. This
game also marked the first time officials wore
microphones in a college bowl game. You will
hear numerous players talking and the referees
discussing plays as they both adjust to this new
on-field technology.
