Iowa football suffered in the 1930's - until
Dr. Eddie Anderson was hired in 1939.
That season the Hawkeyes could scarcely
field 11 men on the gridiron - let alone
battle teams which often featured defensive
and offensive units. Innovative and bold,
Coach Anderson instilled a fighting spirit
in his team which captured the nation's
heart. The outgunned and out-manned
Hawkeyes of 1939 shocked the nation with
dramatic wins over several powerhouses -
including No. 1 Notre Dame 7-6. Nile
Kinnick, 1939's Heisman Trophy winner
and his teammates, out of necessity, played
both offense and defense, becoming known
as the legendary "Iron Men."
