Perfection. It may be unattainable, but the 1976
Indiana Hoosiers came about as close as any team
ever through consistent play and almost eerie
execution of coach Bobby Knight's system. No
Division 1 team has completed an undefeated
season since the ‘76 Hoosiers posted its 32-0
record. And maybe no team tried harder for
perfection, than Indiana and coach Knight.
The final step to Indiana's undefeated season was
the 1976 NCAA Championship Game against Big
Ten Conference rival Michigan. Michigan had
finished second to Indiana in the Big Ten race, and
hoped to switch places in the big dance.
The speedy Ricky Green led Michigan to a 35-29
advantage running a breathtaking fast break offense.
But Scott May, Kent Benson and Quinn Buckner
combined for 36 of Indiana's first 38 points in the
second half to erase the deficit and propel the
Hoosiers to 86-68 victory, a perfect record and the
national title.
