The legend of Jeff Gordon was born at the 1997
DAYTONA 500. The 25 year old dueled a field of
veteran drivers that included Bill Elliot and Dale
Earnhardt, Sr. to become the youngest winner of
NASCAR's grandest event. Earnhardt, running
hard, once again found bad luck at Daytona, hitting
the wall, striking Dale Jarrett, and flying over Ernie
Irvan into the infield. Though he gamely climbed
back into his car to finish the race, it was
disappointment number 19 for Earnhardt.
But this race was more about the daring passing of
the young Gordon, the 1-2-3 sweep of the Hendrick
Racing Team and a promise Gordon made to owner
Rick Hendrick. Hendrick was at home continuing
to fight against leukemia when he got a call from
his young driver. "Jeff told me last night, 'I'm
gonna win this race. I'm gonna make you smile
tomorrow.' And he did," Hendrick said.
