most storied tracks in its short history, the Talladega
Superspeedway is the setting for NASCAR's closest
race to the finish line ever.
Everything seemed to be going right for Dale
Earnhardt. He had won the pole into the race and
held the lead with only four laps to go. Then, out
came the red flag for rain, and Spencer, and Dale
Jarrett passed "The Intimidator." The Race, it
seemed, was just getting started.
The lead changed four times in the final lap alone.
Dale Earnhardt and the #3 car edged out Ernie Irvan
by a mere six inches, or .005 seconds. This was the
closest margin of victory since the advent of
electronic timing.
