The 30th running of the Daytona 500 on Valentines Day 1988 is a day
that will always be remembered by NASCAR fans. It was the first race to
feature restrictor plates, as well as the first race that Dale
Earnhardt's #3 car featured the famous black paint scheme. Even with the
restrictor plates, the race had its share of tense moments. Richard
Petty narrowly escaped without serious harm after a wild accident on
lap 106. This day, though, would belong to another of racings famous
families, the Allisons. After Bobby Allisons' crash at Talladega in 1987
helped usher in the era of restrictor plate racing, he would get
redemption by edging his son Davey Allison by two car laps at the
finish. The win made Bobby the oldest driver to win the Daytona 500 at
50 years of age. Don't miss out on one of NASCARs greatest races at
Daytona as father and son make history in the new dawn of racing.
